In recent years, Intel has been releasing a new generation of processors every two years. This means that the last few generations of motherboards have been out for at least three years. Z390 is the latest chipset and it supports DDR4 memory, but some manufacturers are only offering Z690 boards which can support DDR5 memory.
The z690 motherboard release date is a topic that has been in the news recently. Some premium Z690 Motherboards for 12th Gen Intel Core Alder Lake-S Processors may only support DDR5 memory.

Enthusiasts who intend to upgrade to Intel’s forthcoming 12th Gen Core “Alder Lake-S” CPUs and combine them with an expensive premium motherboard may be forced to upgrade to the next generation of DDR memory.
The Eurasian Economic Commission regulatory agency has noticed filings for ASUS’ forthcoming Z690 motherboards, and several of the items contain markings for whether or not they support DDR4 memory. The inference is that motherboards that don’t have the “D4” designation, like the ROG MAXIMUS Z690 EXTREME, will only accept DDR5 memory.

Although the listings above are clearly exclusive to ASUS, they do raise the potential that other big manufacturers may follow in ASUS’ footsteps and release premium Z690 motherboards that only support DDR5 memory. According to reports, Intel will release this chipset in November.
