In 2013, Hayao Miyazaki’s longtime collaborator and Studio Ghibli co-founder, Isao Takahata, directed the studio’s second film. The Princess Kaguya is based on “The Bamboo Cutter,” an old Japanese fairy tale about a girl who is discovered within a bamboo stalk. Takahata had already alluded to this tale in My Neighbors the Yamadas, in which Nonoko is discovered on a bamboo stalk by her father in a short scene. Takahata’s last film, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, was released in April 2018. Let’s take a closer look.
A poor bamboo cutter (James Caan) discovers a lovely, little princess (Chlo Grace Moretz) within a stalk of bamboo one day. Enchanted by the little kid, he brings her home to his wife (Mary Steenburgen), who decides to raise her as their daughter. The Princess matures into a beautiful young woman at an unnaturally rapid rate. The bamboo cutter discovers presents of beautiful fabric and money within a bamboo shoot one day and interprets it as a message that his young Princess should be nurtured like a true princess. Fancy clothing and a lavish lifestyle in the big city, however, may not make the Princess as happy as her father believes.
The Tale of Princess Kaguya’s distinctive appearance and tone were the first things that impressed me about it. This film follows in the footsteps of My Neighbors the Yamadas in terms of minimalist aesthetic. This film, on the other hand, has a considerably better aesthetic to it. The character designs are similarly overdone, although I find them to be more appealing in general. Overall, I liked My Neighbors the Yamadas, but it was a frantic sequence of vignettes, while Kaguya seems to use identical aesthetic decisions to get radically different results. The Princess Kaguya’s Tale has no reservations about its fairytale universe and fantastical logic. This film takes its time to establish mood and character connections, but once it does, it rapidly becomes fascinating. Despite having characteristics with Isao Takahata’s previous work, the sketchy watercolor style of this film’s animation is really distinctive and evocative. This video is packed with aesthetically stunning images and scenes that could easily be shown in a museum. Joe Hisaishi, a long-time Ghibli composer, brings his A-game to Princess Kaguya, with a naturalist, light music that complements the visuals to create a rich yet unimposing mood. The music is upbeat as Kaguya befriends the local kids, especially Sutemaru, but it becomes more emotional as the sad conclusion approaches. Because Hisaishi’s underscores for Ghibli films are always excellent, I’m finding it difficult to discuss them. They become inextricably linked to the films’ overall mood and the experience they provide. How do you rate someone who consistently performs admirably no matter what is required of them? Is he an extraterrestrial?
The English cast of The Tale of Princess Kaguya is also fantastic, but I haven’t had the opportunity to see the subtitled version yet, which I want to do soon. Chloe Grace Moretz plays the title character with compassion and empathy, while James Caan and Mary Steenburgen shine as her adoptive parents. In Elf, Caan and Steenburgen also starred as a married couple. As Sutemaru, Darren Criss is adequate; I like Criss in American Crime Story, and he does his job here. Outside of his connection with the Princess, Sutemaru is a one-dimensional character. As the Princess’ spurned suitors, John Cho, Beau Bridges, Daniel Dae Kim, Oliver Platt, and James Marsden are hilarious. Woman Sagami, played by Lucy Liu, is the tutor hired by the bamboo cutter to turn the Princess into a respectable lady. The performances are generally beautiful and modest, showing the characters as they are and allowing the audience to make their own judgments.
As she grows up in the rural village with her pals, the Princess is a carefree, go-with-the-flow kind of kid. She is enamored with the flora, animals, and people she meets. In a nutshell, she is uncomplicated; all she wants to do is play with her parents and friends. The film explores the concept of happiness and what may really make a person happy. The bamboo cutter sees the presents he gets as a divine mandate to make the Princess happy, and he follows through. The issue is that he believes the girl’s happiness is contingent on her having rank, money, and an extravagant mansion in the city. Kaguya is happy with the clothing and her new house at first, but she quickly becomes disillusioned with her opulent lifestyle. The Princess longs for a real relationship with her fellow humans, particularly the ordinary folk with whom she formerly lived. Her father chastises her for laboring in the kitchen and garden, robbing her of the little creature pleasures she had following the relocation. He also refuses to let her pals come to her coming-of-age party.
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya succeeds as a tale about parenting, despite the fact that the Princess is the main character and the most energetic figure in the picture. Kaguya’s rapid aging is a metaphor for how children grow up in front of our eyes. Every minute is priceless and ephemeral, and it can never be reclaimed if it is squandered. The Princess was a gift from God, and as such, her parents do all they can to ensure that she is happy. Her father, on the other hand, might have done her a greater service by remaining in the woods, and he would have known it if he had only listened. Her mother is more understanding of her daughter’s desires and demands, but she has little influence in the situation. She is also inclined to believe the bamboo cutter is onto something, as she has shown by her lack of opposition to his ideas. The Princess’ need to be surrounded by friends and family yet not owned by anyone is inherently human. In the end, she returns to her heavenly family, which is both sad and moving. Her pleadings to remain and apologies for returning are heartbreaking; the Princess feels terrible despite the fact that the predicament is nearly all the bamboo cutter’s fault.
The Princess Kaguya’s Tale is a magnificent visual, musical, and voice acting experience. This film seems to be simple at first glance, yet there is a lot to consider under the surface. Takahata is devoted to the narrative he wants to convey and uses a style that elicits strong emotions and early memories. The beautiful, inspiring, heartbreaking story of a child who never really belonged anywhere is told brilliantly via the medium of animation.
